Meta in Brazil's election, iPhone Duo screen cracks
Policy & Society
Sleeping Giants Brasil and CTRL+Z gave Brazil's Superior Electoral Court new evidence of possible unequal treatment of Lula and Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro on Instagram and WhatsApp, including GIF searches, hashtag ordering and Meta AI answers. They asked the court to order fixes within 24 hours and to enforce the R$500,000 (about $99,000) daily fine already set. Last week Folha reported that Meta employees acknowledged internally that Lula's Instagram accounts were negatively affected by restrictions. Meta says the issues were technical and already public, and that any suggestion it favors one side is false. The runoff is on October 25.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu asked Orange, SFR, Free and Bouygues Telecom to be ready to cut access to TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and X two days before the 24 October demonstration, Blast reports. It published the letter and minutes of the meeting, where operators voiced doubts. France used a similar measure in New Caledonia in 2024, before the Conseil d'État overruled it.
Fields medalist Richard Borcherds now grades UC Berkeley homework on completion, saying AI use means there is no point paying readers to check correctness. He spoke after OpenAI's claim that AI agents solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. Separately, an analysis finds the US has lost over 200k media, film and arts jobs in four years, though it says the AI share is hard to prove.
Hardware & Science
iFixit tore down Apple's folding iPhone and gave it 5/10 for repairability. Some owners report screens cracking along the fold, in some cases within hours, and iFixit says some didn't survive setup. Possible cause: a hinge support bar that fails to drop far enough. A YouTuber who dissected a unit reached a similar conclusion about the cause.
Their personalized mRNA vaccine reduced the risk of death or recurrence by 42% against standard treatment in a late-stage melanoma trial. The companies are already engaging with regulators about approval. Full data is being presented at the ESMO conference in Madrid, after an oncology news site reported the results early.

A single WSE-3T wafer has 44 GB of on-chip memory, so Cerebras splits large models across multiple wafers. Its example is open source Kimi K3, about 3T parameters, which it says runs at 1000-2000+ tokens per second. Cerebras cites Kimi K3 scores of 88.3% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and 91.2% on BrowseComp. Separately, Kimi K3.1 Pro's debut drew scrutiny over allegations that influencers were asked to promote it without disclosing a commercial relationship to Moonshot.
On 200 randomly drawn biopsy-proven lesions from the MILK10k dataset, a fine-tuned Inception v3 named the right diagnosis (out of 6) for 125, or 62%. GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 got 84 and 85, or 42%. The CNN was fine-tuned for about twenty minutes on public dermatology images.
A paper describes a training-free method where fresh instances of one model split problems and coordinate through a shared filesystem. On 100 hard LiveCodeBench problems, orchestrated Qwen3.8 Flash Next reached 93.0% pass@1 against Fable 5's 90.4%, at 9% of the cost. Local Qwen3.8-27B rose from 66.8% to 92.4%. Some models saw no gain or got worse.
